When Spain hosts Switzerland in Zaragoza for their League A Group 2 matchup on Saturday, Spain may secure a spot in the 2022–23 UEFA Nations League finals.

The current leaders in the rankings, La Roja, are one point ahead of Portugal, and a loss for the visitors would send them to League B.

Although the current crop of Spanish players may not be as fearsome as they were in 2010, Luis Enrique’s team may still be viewed as a legitimate World Cup contender before departing for Qatar.

To improve upon their loss to France in the championship game the previous year, La Roja has been grouped with Costa Rica, Japan, and Germany in Group E. This week, they also have the potential to win their Nations League group.

Carlos Soler and Pablo Sarabia’s goals helped Enrique’s team defeat the Czech Republic 2-0 in their most recent match, giving them eight points out of a possible 12 and a one-point lead over Portugal, who they will play on matchday six.

Enrique’s team will guarantee their spot in the Nations League finals if Spain defeats Switzerland and the Czech Republic surprises Portugal this weekend. However, it may all come down to the Iberian giants’ matchup the following week.

Spain is in terrific shape heading into Switzerland’s visit thanks to an eight-game winning streak across all competitions, and La Roja hasn’t lost at home since October 2018, though that was in the first Nations League matchup against England.

The Swiss might overtake their League A rivals with a victory in Zaragoza, but they could also be relegated with a loss if Jaroslav Silhavy’s team defeats Portugal because the margin to third-placed Czech Republic is only one point.

In their June meeting, Spain defeated Switzerland 1-0 thanks to a goal from Pablo Sarabia. The Rossocrociati had only ever defeated La Roja once in their previous 24 encounters, which took place in the 2010 World Cup group stage.
