Barcelona Femini kicked out of Spanish Cup for fielding ineligible player

The FC Barcelona Femini women’s team was disqualified from the Copa de la Reina knockout competition for using an ineligible player in the first round.

Barcelona was penalized for fielding former Madrid CFF striker Geyse Ferreira in their last-16 match against Osasuna when she was on suspension following her previous club’s season-ending red card in the Copa de la Reina.

Despite the 9-0 victory for Barcelona, Osasuna challenged the inclusion of Geyse in the lineup, and the Spanish Football Federation’s appeals committee granted their request.

After defeating Villarreal 1-0 and being suspended themselves, Nagore Calderon played for Sevilla, who were also eliminated from this season’s tournament.

The draw for the quarterfinals will now include the names of Osasuna and Villarreal.

Similar situations to the one that led to Real Madrid’s expulsion from the Copa del Rey in 2015 occurred when Denis Cheryshev participated in a cup game against Cadiz while serving a suspension for receiving an excessive number of yellow cards while playing for Valencia the season before.
