Chelsea broke all previous records during the January transfer window by bringing in fewer than seven new players.

To try and recover anything from the disaster that has been the 2022–23 campaign, the Todd Boehly–Clearlake Capital ownership felt the need to maintain their massive spending this winter. All of their new players can play in the Premier League, but due to UEFA regulations, some will be forced to sit out of the squad for this year’s Champions League.

So what are the registration requirements for the Champions League?

What are the requirements for Champions League team registration?

Each side participating in a UEFA competition must submit a roster of no more than 25 players who will play for them on an A-List during the season. Four of the players must have been mainly taught by the club in question, Chelsea, for Chelsea, and eight of them must have had their training in the nation in which their present club is based, in Chelsea’s case, England.

Clubs are granted the opportunity to resubmit their rosters after the January transfer window, but there is a catch: only three replacements can be added to the team.

Formerly, players who had participated in one UEFA competition could not now represent a new team in the same competition.

What guidelines govern the B List?

Clubs are also invited to submit a B List, which includes younger players born after January 1, 2001, in addition to the A-List. All of Chelsea’s new additions, excluding Felix, were born after that day.

However, there is a catch: in order to qualify for the B List, a player must have spent three consecutive years at the club, or two consecutive years if one of those years was a loan within the same association.

This B List may be as long as you like and may be modified up until the stroke of midnight on the day before any UEFA match.

In what ways does this affect Chelsea?

Regardless of the age of Chelsea’s new additions, they would have to be added to the A-List rather than the B-List because they haven’t been at Chelsea for a continuous period of two years.

Graham Potter will have to decide which players will make the cut and which will be cut because UEFA regulations only allow for three changes midway through the season.

Considering only financial considerations, Mudryk, Felix, and Badiashile may be the most likely additions, but Potter has the final say.
