Kevin de Bruyne says he would love to win the UEFA Champions League with Manchester City but has no regrets about the club’s inability to win in recent times.

City are seeking to book a place in the quarterfinals of this season’s competition for the sixth consecutive time when they face RB Leipzig at Etihad in their last 16 second-leg tie.

In the first leg of the match in Germany, Josko Gvardiol’s 70th-minute header offset Riyad Mahrez’s first-half goal, as City once again failed to finish the game despite gaining the lead after a dominant first 45 minutes.

And while City have often enjoyed success on the domestic scene, the story has been a bit different anytime they have played in Europe but De Bruyne says he is only “fortunate” to be winning trophies with the Cityzens.

“Everyone has their own opinion, we want to be the best every year. Eight years has been pretty great. I don’t regret the things I do. Whatever competition (it may be), I try to win. You lose more than you win. I’ve won a lot, I’m fortunate,” he said ahead of Tuesday’s game against Leipzig.

Speaking on the Champions League, the Belgian added: “If you care about the noise, we’ve not won it (the Champions League) but we (Manchester City) have done really well. People base everything on only winning.

“There’s a lot of circumstances, the (Real) Madrid game, Tottenham – we deserved to go through. (There are) moments in games, these things happen.

“I want to win it (the Champions League), but I know as long as we don’t, I’ll get the same questions. If people judge you on that, we just try and win the games, be the best version we can be.”

Pep Guariola’s men, after missing out on the EFL Cup, are in the running once again for the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League.
