After a two-week-long international break, the Premier League resumes with a tantalizing match between Manchester City and Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.
The league’s top two teams from last season are each pursuing distinct goals as the season progresses, with the Citizens looking to catch up to league leaders Arsenal and the Reds hoping to finish in the top four.
As they attempt to win the Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup, Man City enters a crucial period of their season. Pep Guardiola’s team will be eager to continue where they left off after putting together a great run of form prior to the international break.
Yet, City has only lost one of their last 13 home Premier League games against Liverpool, a 4-1 loss in November 2015 under former manager Manuel Pellegrini. This is encouraging going into Saturday’s match.
The Citizens will win four straight Premier League games for the first time this season if they earn all three points in the noon start. This will increase the pressure on Arsenal when they host Leeds United a few hours later.
Over a year after seeking to win an unheard-of quadruple, Liverpool has slipped behind their competitors in all competitions this year and will finish the current campaign trophyless. Ultimately, they won the EFL Cup and FA Cup double.
But Liverpool has more victories over reigning Premier League champions (23) than any other team in the league’s history, including the 1-0 victory over Man City at Anfield in October thanks to a goal from Mohamed Salah in the second half.
The Reds would accomplish just their second league double against Man City in the last 17 seasons if they won on Saturday. Their first came in Klopp’s first season in charge in 2015–16. It would also send a message to their top–four opponents.
