Liverpool take to the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday night seeking to overturn a first-leg loss against Real Madrid for a place in the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League.

The Reds chase a comeback but they do it against a Madrid team touted as “Comeback Kings” by many.

Jurgen Klopp’s side suffered a 2-5 defeat to Los Blancos at Anfield despite taking a 2-0 goal lead early in the game.

The Reds looked to be in control after goals from Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah but Carlo Ancelotti’s side fought very hard to turn around the score posing a big advantage ahead of the return leg.

The game was ultimately described as the battle of goalkeeping errors but both Thibaut Courtois and Alisson Becker will hope not to have a similar experience at the Bernabeu.

Madrid have progressed 26 times of the 27 they have taken a first-leg advantage at this stage of the Champions League, with the only failure being against Ajax during the 2018/19 season.

The Spanish side might boast of a big advantage, they will however need to be wary of the Liverpool team they face considering the out-of-the-blue performance against Manchester United two weekends ago.

It is no secret that Liverpool will play at the Bernabeu with the mentality of nothing to lose but they will also be drawing inspiration from their historic comeback against Madrid’s bitter rivals Barcelona in the 2018/19 campaign.

Liverpool are yet to beat Madrid in any of their last seven meetings since their famous victory in the 2008/09 season. They have lost six times during that period while drawing one.
