Mikel Arteta says Arsenal players must believe winning at Anfield is possible

Mikel Arteta has urged Arsenal players to believe winning at Anfield is a possibility for them ahead of their visit on Sunday.

The Gunners have not enjoyed any success in their last nine Premier League games with Liverpool away from home, losing seven and drawing two.

Arsenal’s last Premier League win at Anfield was during the 2012/13 season when they recorded a 2-0 win over the Reds.

Arteta’s side have been by far the better team in the league as they currently command an eight-point lead at the top of the table ahead of Manchester City with nine games to go.

With Bukayo Saka feeling ill before last weekend’s game against Leeds United, the England international started from the bench and made a substitute appearance.

Gabriel Jesus, Gabriel Martinelli, Leandro Trossard, and Martin Odegaard, who played against Leeds, have all had spells of brilliant form this season and would be unlucky to be left out against Liverpool.

Jesus’ performance in the 4-1 victory over Leeds at Emirates Stadium likely confirmed that he will keep his spot, which might suggest that January addition Trossard could be the forward to pull out. However, the Belgian international has put up a brilliant show already at Anfield this season when he scored a hat-trick for Brighton in a 3-3 draw earlier in the campaign, and Arteta’s comments on that accomplishment likely give away that Trossard will be playing.

“It’s great to have a player who has experienced something really nice and positive at that stadium,” Arteta said. “He was a crucial player that day and it was a beautiful game to watch. That’s what we need, a lot of players on the pitch with belief that we can go there and win,” he said at the press conference.

A win for Arsenal will take them to 75 points while Liverpool could be moving further away from the top four spots with a loss.
