Real Madrid defender Antonio Rudiger has slammed the current Chelsea squad by comparing them to the group he was a part of when they won the Champions League in 2021.
Rudiger, who joined Real Madrid following the end of the 2021/22 campaign, thinks that the Chelsea squad he played with in their Champions League winning season in 2020/21 was significantly superior to the current Blues side.
The German’s remarks were made just a few days before Real Madrid and Chelsea square off at the Santiago Bernabeu for the opening leg of their Champions League quarterfinal matchup.
“The Chelsea team I played for is nothing like the current Chelsea team. But what is clear to me is that the match will be tough, they have plenty of quality players,” Rudiger said in an interview with the Spanish paper, Marca.
Real Madrid and Chelsea both suffered losses in their respective league games against Villarreal and Wolves over the weekend prior to their crucial Champions League match.
The Blues are currently in 11th place in the Premier League, 12 points behind league leaders Barcelona. Carlo Ancelotti’s team.

Chelsea's remarkable record of avoiding defeat against the holders should come to an end in a comprehensive manner, despite the fact that they appear to have a formula for success against Champions League champions. Villarreal demonstrated that Ancelotti's team is far from impenetrable at the back, but Los Blancos rested a number of prominent players over the weekend and should be fully confident of building a sizable first-leg advantage before traveling to Stamford Bridge next week.
