Frank Lampard has assured his Chelsea players they are capable of overturning the two-goal deficit against Real Madrid at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues fell to a 0-2 loss at the Santiago Bernabeu in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarterfinal tie against Madrid on Wednesday, April 12. Karim Benzema opened the scoring for Los Blancos in the first half before Asensio came off the bench to net the second.

Despite going a man down in between the goals, Chelsea are still in the tie having only conceded twice in the game and Lampard believes his side could still turn things around in London.

“There were some good things but the result is the reality,” Lampard, who returned to the club last week in the wake of Graham Potter’s sacking, told BT Sport.

“But I just said to the players that special things can happen at Stamford Bridge. They are a good team but we have to believe.”

Chelsea, who have gone four games without scoring, will likely face overwhelming odds but Lampard has a week to try and help the team regain some attacking confidence.

“It’s been a difficult period for the players and I think there’s a bit of a lack of belief,” the club’s record goalscorer said. “They have to understand how good they are and what they can do and maybe we’re a bit short of that at the moment.

“We have to be much more positive in what we’re doing.”
