Former Barcelona captain Javier Mascherano believes Paris Saint-Germain will regret how they are treating Lionel Messi at the moment and says the club does not know the value of the player.

The Messi two-week suspension cast an awful light on the 35-year-old, with previous teammates such as Rivaldo criticising the Argentine for his actions.

Messi was suspended by PSG owing to his unauthorised vacation to Saudi Arabia. People like his former teammate Javier Mascherano are protecting him as the 2022 FIFA World Cup approaches.

Mascherano believes the capital club will come to regret their treatment of the veteran goal scorer.

“It’s a shame not to realize the type of player they were lucky enough to have in their team, Mascherano told D Sports radio (h/t RMC Sport). I think that ten years ago, no Parisian supporter would have imagined having in their team the best player in history. And instead of liking him, they spent these two years criticizing him.

“In 10 years, they will regret it, continued Javier Mascherano. Any team in the world would give anything to have it for five minutes … if there is one thing where Leo cannot be criticized, it is his professionalism.”

On Friday, Messi issued an apology to the club and its supporters via his social media accounts. The next question is if the forward will return to the French giants after his suspension expires.

PSG will have three games left in the 2022-23 Ligue 1 season, and the French giants are presently striving to stay atop the table, so if Messi’s season is over, they may have jeopardised their chances of winning a title.
