Less than a year after seeing a lot of money invested in the club, Frank Lampard says Chelsea needs rebuilding ahead of the 2023/24 season.

The Blues succumbed to a 1-4 defeat to Manchester United in the penultimate Premier League game on Thursday night at Old Trafford as Marcus Rashford scored his 30th goal of the season.

Following the acquisition of Stamford Bridge by the Todd Boehly-led consortium, considerable money has been invested in new faces, with a £106 million signing for World Cup-winning midfielder Enzo Fernandez shattering the British transfer record.

Chelsea, on the other hand, have seen little return on that investment, as they are set to finish in the Premier League’s bottom half this season, and interim manager Lampard admits that more money will be needed to repair a broken team.

Following their loss to the Red Devils, Lampard, who is currently the caretaker of the team said: “It’s a bad year for the club. The important thing is you get to the bottom of how it improves. It needs a rebuild, the club will move on in the summer in terms of the squad. Things need to improve to get to the level.”

Mauricio Pochettino appears to be in a position to take over as manager of Chelsea this summer, therefore Lampard won’t be present to observe the rebuilding of the squad. However, the former England international states he has little advice to provide to Pochettino.

“To come in without a pre-season and assess, it’s probably not my time to give my opinions. It’ll be someone else’s decisions and a pre-season and start and look will be imperative,” he added.

Chelsea will come up against Newcastle United in their last game of the season over the weekend.
