Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has called on Harry Maguire to make a decision this summer about his future at the club following his lack of minutes in the 2022/23 season.

The Red Devils’ captain only managed 16 Premier League appearances this season and was a second-choice option to either of Lisandro Martinez or Raphael Varane.

Ten Hag has been clear from the on-set with his decision to make changes to his squad with the departures of Eric Bailey, Axel Tuanzebe, Phil Jones and a host of others imminent.

“No one would be happy with this situation. He is not as well. He trains always on best levels, so with 100% effort. So he handles that situation well and he’s in that manner and in his captaincy he’s important for the squad,” the United gaffer told The Times.

Maguire has been on the receiving end of lots of criticism this season when he featured for the Old Trafford outfit. His performance in the Europa League tie against Sevilla in the quarterfinal was far from convincing.

“He has high competition there [at centre-back] with Raphael Varane, who’s fantastic,” Ten Hag added.

“Let’s say I’m happy he’s here and when we needed him he did his job. But it’s also a decision he has to make.”

The England centre-back was named as the captain of the team a season after his big-money move from Leicester City in 2019.
