AS Roma will have another opportunity to add the UEFA Europa League to their trophy cabinet on Wednesday evening but they have to do it against Sevilla, a team that knows how to play this competition.

The Italian side has made good progress in the last two years winning the maiden edition of the Conference League and reaching the final of this year’s Europa League.

Both teams have struggled in local competition but succeeded in Europe’s second-tier tournament, and only one can return home with the trophy at the end of the campaign.

Sevilla reached the final of the competition after beating Juventus on aggregate having played out a 1-1 draw in the first leg.

Roma’s first-leg win over Bayer Leverkusen was enough to ensure Jose Mourinho’s side advanced to the last two and have an opportunity to challenge for another silverware.

Sevilla have won the competition on all previous occasions they have reached the final, with the first triumph coming in 2006, when current captain Jesus Navas lifted the cup at the age of 20, after Sevilla defeated Middlesbrough.

The most recent victory occurred three years ago, and now the tournament’s most successful team will complete a challenging 2022-23 campaign by flying to Hungary, which will host its first European final since 1985.

If Roma win this week, Mourinho will become the most decorated manager in the long history of European competition, surpassing Italian maestro Giovanni Trapattoni, and after guiding the Giallorossi to the inaugural Europa Conference League trophy last year, he will also become the first coach to win the Europa League with three different clubs, following previous triumphs with Porto (2003) and Manchester United (2017).

Though Roma fell to Inter in their first UEFA Cup final appearance in 1991, Wednesday’s match will be the club’s fifth in total, with Mourinho’s side defeating Feyenoord in Tirana this time last year.
