Manchester United target Jurrien Timber has not closed the door on a possible transfer to Old Trafford following Ajax’s trophyless season at the end of the 2022/23 season.

The Red Devils were prominently linked with the highly-rated 21-year-old a year ago, with Erik ten Hag eager to rejoin a player with whom he had worked in Amsterdam.

There was no agreement, and Liverpool is thought to have entered the race for the Netherlands international since then. The versatile defender, who can play as a right-back or centre-half, is causing more conjecture at the moment and confesses that he is not in contract discussions with Ajax.

Timber has told Vandaag Inside when quizzed on his future: “Will I stay with Ajax anyway? I’m not sure, I can’t stay that. I’m not in talks with Ajax now. My agent had a good talk a few times, but it’s not like we’re talking about anything right now.”

Timber’s current contract is set to expire in the summer of 2025, which means Ajax will be able to extract substantial compensation from any sale.

United are hoping to add to their squad in the latest transfer season, with Harry Maguire likely leaving Old Trafford, while Liverpool are searching for long-term additions to a squad that has only seen small changes in defence and midfield in recent years.
