Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes Arsenal will never win the Premier League on the strength of Aaron Ramsdale alone, and he supports the loan signing of Brentford goalkeeper David Raya.
Raya joined Arsenal after the season began, and has appeared in the Gunners’ last two games. The Spaniard was in post during the 1-0 league win against Everton on Sunday and returned for the 4-0 Champions League win at home against PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday.
It has sparked controversy about who Arsenal’s number one goalkeeper is, with both players keen to retain the post as Mikel Arteta’s team battles on numerous fronts.
During the Champions League coverage on CBS Sports in America on Wednesday, ex-goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel asked Carragher if Raya was better than Ramsdale.
“100 per cent,” Carragher said. “Arsenal will never win the league with Ramsdale in goal, no chance. Ramsdale is playing for Arsenal and he can’t even get in the England team.”
While Raya’s deal is now on loan, the Gunners can sign the Spanish keeper permanently for £27 million at the end of the season.
