Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta says he understands the ‘frustrations’ of Aaron Ramsdale following the goalkeeper not playing any part in Arsenal’s last two games.

The England international has been on the bench for the games against Everton and PSV in the UEFA Champions League with summer signing David Raya taking his place during that time.

Raya has kept cleansheets in both games that he has been given the nod, with questions being raised about Ramsdale’s position at the club.

Arteta says he is yet to make a decision on who keeps the post when Arsenal face Tottenham Hotspur in the North London Derby on Sunday.

“I suffer and care about every player who’s not playing, but this is the competition,” said the Gunners boss.

“This is my job as well to make decisions in the best possible way for the team.”

Ramsdale had started 52 consecutive Premier League games for Arsenal before losing his place to Raya last Sunday at Goodison Park.

After the game, Arteta downplayed the significance of the decision, saying he was glad to rotate goalkeepers like he would any other outfield position.

Asked during his pressure on Friday about Ramsdale’s reaction, the Spanish trainer said: “I understand [his frustration] and it’s very difficult for every player.

“He’s been very supportive and good around the place and that’s what I expect from every single player because when you’re on the field there is someone else who’s not so it works both ways. So far he’s been very good.

“It is hard and with other players, it’s the same. Aaron is an exceptional character and has a charisma and aura around him and we all know that.

“We have to deal with that but I need to make a line-up to prepare for the game.”
