Newcastle United host Manchester City in the third round of the EFL Cup on Wednesday, after hammering Sheffield United 8-0 away from home.

While the Magpies humiliated the Blades last time out, Manchester City defeated Nottingham Forest 2-0 to extend their unbeaten start to the 2023/24 season.

Eddie Howe’s side seems to be finding their confidence back after a slow start to the new season and the result at the Bramall Lane was more than impressive for them.

However, they come up against a Man City side that seems to be getting better with every game they have played so far this campaign.

Newcastle had a poor start to the season, losing three of their first four games, but they have improved in recent weeks, with a 1-0 win over Brentford and a goalless draw with AC Milan before Sunday’s record-breaking win.

Newcastle now seem like the team that reached the EFL Cup final while finishing fourth in the Premier League last season, which means Howe’s side will fancy their chances of ending Manchester City’s winning start to the season.

City are the only team in the Premier League with a perfect record this season, having started with six straight wins, and goalkeeper Ederson has conceded just three goals to help Man City enjoy the best defensive record in the league.

It is worth noting that City have won the EFL Cup in six of the previous ten seasons, including four consecutive victories between 2018 and 2021, indicating that Pep Guardiola and his players understand what it takes to win the competition.
