Erik ten Hag has backed goalkeeper Andre Onana to come back stronger after his latest role in Manchester United’s defeat in the UEFA Champions League.
The Cameroon international was at fault for Casemiro’s red card as he gave the ball away cheaply in his own half before the Brazilian fouled Dries Mertens in an attempt to stop him from scoring.
The foul led to a penalty which was later missed by Mauro Icardi but the Argentine went on to score the winning goal as United suffered their second defeat in the competition.
The horror show on Tuesday night adds to his series of unimpressive performances for the Red Devils since joining them from Inter Milan with United fans clamouring for the shot-stopper to be dropped.
However, Ten Hag has extended support to the goalkeeper and asked him to rediscover his best form soon.
“We are happy with our goalkeeping group, definitely with Andre,” Ten Hag said. “He was in one semi-final of the Champions League, last year he was in the final of the Champions League, he has the capabilities to be one of the best goalkeepers in the world.
“He has shown that and he will do. We already have seen in games his great capabilities, also his personality after he made mistakes. He will bounce back and I am sure he will in the coming games as well.”
United their attention to the Premier League this weekend where they face Brentford before the international break.
Galatasaray earned good value for their win, and they are now a good bet to advance to the knockout stages after taking four points from their first two games.
