Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta says the team’s 2-0 victory over Sevilla in the UEFA Champions League is a huge step moving forward following recent defeats in the EFL Cup and the Premier League.

The Gunners will look to book an early place in the knockout stage with a game to spare when they take on Ligue 1 side RC Lens at the Emirates in their fifth game in the competition.

However, Arteta believes his side showed great character and determination to hold onto all three points at home in convincing fashion edging past Europa League champions Sevilla over two legs.

“I’m really pleased with the performance. The determination, the quality and the aggression we showed was really pleasing to watch,” he said after the game.

“It was a really convincing win generating a lot and not conceding anything. It was a big step for us.”

The win comes at a good time for the North London side after back-to-back defeats against West Ham United and Newcastle United in the Cup competition and Premier League respectively.

They face Burnley in their next game over the weekend.
