Gavi risks missing Euro 2024 after ‘serious’ knee injury

Spain international Gavi could be set to miss the 2024 European Championships after picking up a serious injury on Sunday night.

Gavi was named in the starting lineup for the qualifier against Georgia at home despite Spain already booking their place in the competition.

The central midfielder was forced off in the first half of Sunday’s clash and looked to be in real pain as he hobbled off the pitch.

The RFEF had an initial check on the youngster and said he had a “major injury” with more tests expected to be conducted.

Spain’s team doctor Óscar Luis Celada told Spanish broadcaster RTVE the team is “very worried” about the 19-year-old who now looks set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

More tests are now required before an official diagnosis can be made, but the worry is that he has torn his ACL, which will likely keep him out for the remainder of the season.

Spain’s players appear to be well aware that Gavi is in serious trouble. After scoring, Ferran Torres held up Gavi’s shirt in an obvious show of solidarity for his teammate.
