Chelsea full-back Reece James says his current fitness level is the best he has had in a long time after being sidelined for two months with a hamstring injury.

Since the start of the 2021/2022 season, the Englishman has struggled with injuries and has been far from his best level, missing 45 matches in the period.

Named captain of the Blues during the summer, James has only featured in six Premier League games and has failed to complete any of them this season, with Chelsea’s medical team keeping close tabs on the fullback’s workload.

Speaking to Chelsea media in an interview following his return from injury, the England international said: “I haven’t felt this good in a long time. I’m sure, I definitely feel my strength and fitness building up again”.

“My body gave me a warning, but I didn’t listen in the past. I’m more aware now when something is screaming, slow down a bit”.

James’ return to action has Chelsea flying in recent matches with two wins and a draw in three games as the 22-year-old looks to rediscover his best self at Stanford Bridge.

“You have to move slow and steady. That’s what I have been doing. I’m slowly progressing,” he added.

Chelsea take on Newcastle at St James’ Park on their return to the Premier League action next weekend.
