Kobbie Mainoo will be monitored – Gary Southgate

England boss Gary Southgate says the Three Lions will be monitoring the progress of Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo following his brilliant performances.

The youngster has been an integral part of Erik ten Hag’s set-up since returning from a long injury layoff.

Mainoo has featured in nine Premier League games this season and two others in the UEFA Champions League.

The midfielder has two goals in his last three games for the club and has started attracting talks of an imminent national team call-up.

Southgate acknowledged the development of the youngster while revealing he will be watched in the coming weeks.

“He’s doing brilliantly. I’m not certain he’s necessarily going to be a defensive midfielder, as such,” he said.

“He’s quite a progressive player but he’s had a fabulous start to his career, and it will be good to monitor him as we go forward.”

Despite playing for England’s youth teams, Mainoo is also a target of the Ghana Football Association.
