After dropping points against Atletico Madrid last weekend, Real Madrid will be hoping to extend their lead when they face Girona on Sunday.

Saturday’s fixture features the top two teams on the La Liga table with just two points separating them.

A Marcos Llorente late header denied Los Blancos all three points against Diego Simeone’s side last weekend while Girona failed to score against Real Sociedad resulting in a goalless stalemate.

Both Madrid and Girona have suffered one league defeat this season – the former’s came against rivals Atletico while Girona lost at home to Carlo Ancelotti’s men.

In their first meeting earlier this campaign, goals from Joselu, Aurelien Tchouameni and Jude Bellingham scored in a 3-0 win away from home despite a late red card to Nacho Fernandez.

Girona have been an interesting opposition this season and are only second to Madrid when it comes to their away performance. They have amassed 27 points from 11 games on the road, two less than they have at home in 12 games (29).

Madrid have the same points at home as their away record despite a game less.

A win for Madrid will take them five points clear of Girona while a win for the latter will take them above Los Blancos.

Saturday’s fixture is set to kick off at 17:30 GMT.
