Former Manchester United Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed the club turned down an opportunity to sign Erling Haaland before he moved to Salzburg.
Solskjaer, who managed Norwegian side Molde in the early parts of his managerial career, says he recommended the forward to United’s hierarchy.
Haaland had been tipped as a budding star while playing in the Danish league before he joined the Austrian side.
The Norwegian didn’t take long to become a global star after joining Borussia Dortmund before initially moving to Manchester City.
Speaking to We Are The Overlap, the 1999 Champions League winner said, “The summer before I got to Man United I rang them and said: you’ve got to sign Erling Haaland. He will be top. Absolutely top class.”
“That was June, July 2018… they said: nah, we’ve got enough reports.
“Molde sold him to Salzburg but after he didn’t play for them for three or four months, I said to Man United: just sign him now!
“He had a release clause for €20m. It would have been a bargain.”
Haaland led Man City to the treble in his first season in England.
