Jurgen Klopp says he ‘understands’ Xabi Alonso’s decision to turn down Liverpool and stay at Bayer Leverkusen.

The former Real Madrid midfielder confirmed he will stay at the German club beyond the 2023/24 season despite interest from several top clubs.

Liverpool and Bayern Munich were among clubs to have reportedly expressed interest in luring the Spaniard away from Bay Arena at the end of the season.

However, Alonso has communicated his desire to continue his relationship with the Bundesliga table toppers.

Klopp, who was hoping Alonso could replace him at Anfield, believes it is understandable that Alonso has made his intentions clear.

“He is doing an incredible job there. They have a great team and will probably keep the team together,” said the German trainer.

“I understand that he wants to do that.

“For the other stuff, nothing I have to say about that to be honest”.

Alonso and Leverkusen are currently on a 36-game unbeaten run across all competitions, the most by a German club.
