Pep Guardiola acknowledges that failing to win the Champions League will make his stint at Manchester City “not complete.”
Guardiola has come under fire for City’s failure to win the European championship despite being the team to beat in England for most of the last 10 years.
They made it to the final in 2021 but lost to Chelsea, and they’ve recently suffered heartbreaking knockout-round losses to Tottenham Hotspur and Real Madrid.
In November, Guardiola agreed to a two-year contract deal that will keep him with the team through 2025.
Thursday’s League Cup match between City and Liverpool has been one of the most anticipated games in the last five years given the caliber and prominence of both teams.
Following a contentious meeting in the Premier League in October at Anfield, were chanting from the away end and coins being thrown toward Guardiola sparked controversy, fans from both sides have demanded any infractions to be recorded.
Guardiola has urged fans to cheer on their side wholeheartedly while the players also try to enjoy themselves on the pitch.
“We want to behave well – the players, managers, spectators, but sometimes emotions get involved and things happen,” he added.
“People cannot behave ice cold when a goal is disallowed when it should be a goal in this type of game. We will always react in that way, but respect for officials, rules, and opponents is always there from my point of view.”
